Film Restoration

Our Color Correction, Grain Elimination and Stabilization Technology is optional.

Certainly the process you choose to scan the film (Pro HD, Pro 2K, Pro 4K) will determine how sharp the video is. Restoration will decided how good and accurate the content looks.

First, It is normal for film to color shift blue or red as it ages. Eventually there will be no color but blue or red left. Ideally you want to have your film scanned before it starts shifting but for most film we are already past that point. Most film starts to color shift around 25-30 years. So, it is important to get your film scanned as soon as possible after 25-30 years to give it the best chance of being fully color corrected back to the colors that were originally on the film.

Second, film grain (hundreds of tiny little dots per frame) is normal and natural to be on all types of film. But, we have the technology to remove 90-95% of the film grain. This would give you a much cleaner/sharper image of all the things you care about except the grain. See examples below.

Lastly, most amateur film was shot with a handheld camera. This means there is lots of up/down/left/right movement. We can stabilize the image up to a movement of about 10%. Any more than that would be skipped. This 10% limit allows us to stabilize much of the image but bypasses the large movements to avoid having to crop out too much of the image area.

8mm and Super 8 Film Examples

Super 8 Film Color & Exposure Correction

Color shifting blue and darkening of the film are very typical for any type of old 8mm or super 8 movie film. Usually we are able to fix both color and exposure issues to get the film to look like it did when it was first taken.

Advanced 8mm Film Grain Elimination Technology

It is easy to find the film grain by looking at the wall (on the Before picture) but film grain is on everything throughout the frame. All film will look like this including 8mm, super 8, 16mm and 35mm film. The images below are full resolution image we have cropped to the upper right corner to fit this table (this is 1/6th of the original frame). This is the level of detail you will see on your HDTV. It is clear when you look at the after image that the film grain elimination technology did a great job of removing nearly all the film grain while keeping everything else nice and sharp.

Advanced Scratch and Surface Damage Removal Technology

All film has a certain degree of surface damage and most film have some scratches from running the film through a projector. Our advanced scratch and surface damage technology is able to remove about 70-80% of the damage. Results will vary. This technology does not remove humidity damage.

Advanced Film Stabilization Technology

Most amateur films have some stabilization issues just because of the way the film was shot. It was shot with a handheld camera that was moving almost all the time as opposed to sitting on a tripod. You would be surprised to see how unstable most film is.

16mm Film Examples

16mm Color & Exposure Correction

Color shifting and darkening of the film are very typical for any type of old movie film. Usually we are able to fix both color and exposure issues to get the film to look like it did when it was first taken.
